Legends of my Grandfather (2022)

A documentary about my grandfather and his life as an artist, revolutionary, storyteller and father. As an archive of his legacy, this piece explores the dynamic between place and memory through stories told to me by those who knew him. The documentary juxtaposes my grandfather’s wartime period with present day Vietnam and his hometown as it stands now. Filling in the gaps of the past with images of the every day, this documentary explores how a cultural era defines an artist, and how remembering the past inevitably brings us to face our present.

During September 2020, I worked at Hanoi's Á Space to create a 30 minute documentary about my grandfather and his legacy, exploring the village of Nam Trực (his hometown) alongside the stories people from my family and the village have of him.
